P – Pet Shop Boys

I come to you today with an urgent question; is it acceptable for a straight guy to enjoy the music of the Pet Shop Boys?

I can’t be the only person out there who suffers with this dilemma.  There’s something overwhelmingly camp about them, like a Madonna album being delivered to your door by Liza Minelli.  Every fibre of my being tells me not to listen to them, “this kind of music isn’t for you”, and yet, I can’t help it.  I used to think I was comfortable in my sexuality, but these guys just throw me off course

Who can resist belting out “Go West!”?  The Pet Shop Boys are pure, undiluted joy that has been digitised and pushed through your ears.  I don’t care what people think of me any longer.  I’m coming out of the closet.  It feels liberating to say this out loud.

I guess that’s all I have to say about that.  Instead, let us enjoy some videos of them in action:

  1. If you were a child of the 80s, it's unavoidable. It would be like being a fan of Duran Duran, you have no choice. But if you were born in the 90s, then you have no excuse for liking any band that was created in the 80s, no matter your gender.

    1. Luckily, I was born in the 80's. Thanks for the confirmation, I was starting to have a panic attack.

    1. Surprisingly, they're still going! By now, you'd have thought they'd have graduated from being Pet Shop Boys to Pet Superstore Boys, or Multinational Conglomerate Boys, but I guess they just don't have the right business plan.

  3. I think if you were born in the 80's, you can like the Pet Shop Boys no matter what your orientation.

    1. Does this philosophy extend to Aha - Take On Me?

  4. I actually have Love Etc. and West End Girls on my iPod. It's cerainly not immasculating whatsoever when I realize my headphones aren't plugged in correctly and my jams are blaring as I stroll the boardwalk.

    1. Well if I've come out publicly, you should too. Play that music as loud as you can!

  5. Due respect Pickleope, I'm circa. '67 and didn't like them in the day...oh, wait. I'm bad at math...does this mean that I listened to them in college? Actually...didn't listen because I was so getting my groove on that it was just noise.

No panic Addman....listen to what you want dude. Your a muppet anyway, right? Bring it.

    1. Muppets are very self conscious. That's mainly due to burly men slipping a hand up your backside on a daily basis. Thanks for the support though.

  6. OMG! I love the Pet Shop Boys! And you have posted some of my favorite songs by them too. I think it is completely acceptable for a straight guy to like them, and I am proud of you for coming out :)

  7. I like the Pet Shop Boys. I often work out to "Heart" when I am near-collapsing on the elliptical machines (it has a good beat and the song is long). Have no shame in admitting the things that you like!

    1. Great stuff. I think we're generating an army of Pet Shop Boys fans here. Soon we shall rise up and claim the earth.

  8. I believe "West End Girls" is the only song I have heard from them. It might be because I don't think they're gay enough to listen to. There are times when I am inclined to "diva" my music selection and The Pet Shop Boys just don't do it for me. When I want effeminate music, I usually go straight to show tunes...and Metallica.

  9. I hate the Pet Shop Boys, they're such queens. But Erasure? Now that's some music I can get into to. Maybe it's the hot pants. Love me some Erasure.

  10. West End Girls is always my favorite, but I've become rather fond of Go West because of the game DDR.

  12. It doesn't matter your orientation, the music is more than this. I like Erasure but I think we don't have to compare both.
Pet Shop Boys is one of the best from England, I love Pet Shop Boys and that's all.

  13. I liked your article and your responses very much, thank you:)

And as to Pet shop Boys, simply one of the greatest bands in the world, gay or not. Their music is eternal.

  14. Youre Kidding, right? I was born in the late 1970s and hate hate hate the Pet Shop Boys. Boring camp voices with uninspiring music. Their music makes me feel so depressed after hearing it and feel the need to ask for compensation for enduring the suffering of the Pet Shop Boy.OMG what a rubbish name for a group as well I just dont know how they are still going. I will celebrate when they do give up though!
